Google’s SERP Features and Their Benefits for Businesses

Google constantly evolves how it organizes and presents its Search Result Pages (SERPs), and the traditional ‘blue links’ lose their appeal.

Today, most search results pages include features that show enriched information. In this article, I will highlight some of the most common SERP Features, how they can impact your presence in search results, and how to take advantage of them to grow your business.

Table of Contents

What Are SERP Features?

SERP features are enriched search results that go beyond traditional blue links. They are intended to improve user experience through quick answers, rich media, and interactive elements directly on the search engine results page.

Understanding SERP Features
SERP features can show up across the whole search result page

SERP feature examples include Featured Snippets, People Also Ask (PAA) boxes, Knowledge Panels, and Video Carousels. Nearly 99% of Google searches now include at least one SERP feature.

While SERP features can improve user experience for website owners, the SERP features can both create opportunities and pose threats.

Since SERP features were added, traditional search results are getting less attention. This means less traffic for websites that depend on the traditional blue links.

Why Does Google Use SERP Features?

Google’s goal is to provide searchers with the best search experience. With its algorithm, it tries to deliver the information that best serves the intent of the search, the SERP features play an important role in presenting these results in an easy-to-understand format.

Here’s a breakdown of what Google is trying to achieve with its SERP features:

  • Improve user experience –  Snippets, images, tables, and product carousels make it easy for searchers to find what they need.
  • Reduce unnecessary clicks – Some results (like AI Overviews and Featured Snippets) answer queries directly.
  • Encourage engagement – Features like “People Also Ask” keep users exploring related topics.

Types of SERP Features

Understanding and optimizing for search features can improve your website’s search visibility and increase organic traffic. Below are the 10 most common SERP features I want to describe in this article:

Featured Snippets pull relevant content from a web page and display it at the top of the search results. These snippets can appear in a paragraph, list, or table format.

Featured Snippets can lead to ‘zero-click searches’ — it provides users with their answers without visiting the website where the information is pulled. For website owners, this means a loss of traffic. At the same time, being featured in these snippets can positively impact your Brand awareness and authority.

AI Overviews

AI Overviews in search are AI-generated responses to search queries that appear at the top of search results, and compile insights from multiple sources. AI overviews can also lead to zero-click searches, keeping the users on the search result page.

You can find many articles online that explain how to get your content mentioned in AI results. But right now, research shows that the brands showing up the most in AI are the ones already ranking high in search. So in the end, it all comes down to having strong SEO performance.

Popular Products is a feature that shows a row of products when people use search to shop. It highlights product images, prices, ratings, and links to where you can buy the product.

Having your product —or your competitor’s— show up here can have a big impact on your product visibility and revenue. Using structured data, accurate pricing, high-quality images, and adding your products to your Google Merchant Center account makes it more likely that your product will be listed in the Popular Products feature.

Local Pack

The local pack is a search feature that shows when a user is searching for something nearby. It includes three business listings in a map box at the top of Google’s results.

Ranking in the Local Pack matters for businesses that depend on visits, orders, and purchases from people nearby. To optimize for the Local Pack, businesses need to keep their Google Business Profile updated, have a good review score, and make sure their contact info is accurate and the same everywhere online.

People Also Ask (PAA) Boxes

People Also Ask boxes present a series of related questions based on the user’s search query. This feature encourages deeper exploration by providing users with more relevant information without requiring a new search.

Appearing in PAA boxes can increase your website’s exposure, as users frequently interact with these expandable questions. Businesses can optimize for this feature by identifying common questions in their industry and creating content that addresses and answers these questions.

Discussions and Forums

Brands can optimize for this feature by engaging in relevant discussions on platforms that matter for their industry.

Image Packs

The Image Pack feature combines pictures in a grid for visual search intent. It allows people to use images to find what they need.

To show up in the Image Pack, businesses and content creators need to use clear images, name the files correctly, and add alt text to describe them.

Knowledge Panels

A knowledge panel in search is an information box that appears on the right side of Google search results. It displays key facts about people, places, organizations, or things. Google pulls this data from sources like Wikipedia, Google’s Knowledge Graph, and other authoritative databases.

Being visible in a Knowledge Panel helps build trust and makes more people aware of you or your company/brand.

Video Carousels

The Video Carousel feature is a collection of video results that appear directly on Google’s search results page. These carousels showcase YouTube and other video content based on relevance to the query. They often appear for how-to, tutorial, and review-related searches and drive high engagement.

To show up in Video Carousels, videos need strong titles, clear descriptions, and accurate transcripts.

How to Track Your Site’s SERP Features

Want to see how your site shows up in Google’s search results? Tracking SERP (Search Engine Results Page) features helps you understand where you appear and how you can improve your visibility. Here’s how to stay on top of it.

Check Google Search Console : Google Search Console gives you free insights into how your site performs. Go to Performance > Search results, then click Search appearance to see which SERP features you show up in. Pay attention to clicks, impressions, and rankings to spot trends.

Search Your Keywords Manually: Sometimes, the best way to check your rankings is to Google your keywords. Use incognito mode to get an unbiased view. Look for featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and other search elements where your content could appear.

Track Your Structured Data: Google pulls a lot of SERP features from structured data (Schema markup). Run your pages through Google’s Rich Results Test and check the Enhancements report in Search Console. If your schema isn’t working, your content might not show up in rich results.

Watch What Your Competitors Are Doing: See which SERP features your competitors dominate using tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush. If they’re ranking in featured snippets or local packs, analyze their content and optimize yours to compete.

Set Up Alerts for SERP Changes: Many SEO platforms let you set alerts when rankings or SERP features change. This helps you react quickly when you gain or lose a spot in search results.

Stay Ahead in Search

SERP features change the way users interact with search results. With organic listings pushed further down, relying on the traditional ‘blue links’ alone will not be enough. SERP features provide an opportunity for better visibility, if you know what you are optimizing for.
