Video content continues to gain popularity and affect consumers’ purchase intention. And more and more clients understand the impact video content marketing can have on their engagement and conversion metrics.
“short-form video content’s usefulness, ease of use, and entertainment significantly affect consumers’ trust and purchase intention.”
But while many brands embed videos on product detail pages (PDPs), very few optimize them with the video ranking factors in mind, which is necessary if you want them to be discoverable in the video search results.
In this article we’ll share our experience and breakdown our recommendations into a practical, 2026-ready playbook on how to optimize (product) video content for search.
1. Why Video Pages Are Often Ignored by Google
2. A Hybrid Approach: Native + Social Video
3. Optimizing for the Google Search Video Carousel
4. Appearing in Google’s Video Tab
5. Building SEO-Optimized Watch Pages
6. Technical SEO for Video
7. Leveraging Social Media for Video Visibility
Let’s get started.
Why Video Pages Are Often Ignored by Google
"Many embedded product videos fail to rank simply because they are buried beneath the fold, hidden behind tabs, or are not hosted on dedicated video pages. By 'hiding' the video content like this you're effectively signaling to the search engines the videos aren’t important."
Anatolii, Rankability.ae
Below is a screenshot of the video-page indexing chart from one of our clients. In March, the product team decided to add videos to a group of selected PDPs. The easiest way for them to do so was to place a link to the video content (hidden) at the end of the product image carrousel.
The result: out off 342 uploaded videos only 11 were indexed. And every one of them ended up being de-indexed again within five months.
For this specific use-case, in short, we recommended our client to:
- Host the videos on their own domain (instead of a video hosting platform)
- Use crawlable video URLs directly in the HTML source code
- Resize the videos to fit the viewport
- Implement the VideoObject structured data markup (example below)
- Update the XML sitemaps to include video details
Our Practical Guide on How to Optimize Marketing Videos for Search
Use a hybrid approach combining native & social video content
The best-performing brands in search combine both native-hosted video pages and videos posted on the social networks. This allows the brands to laverage both their own brand and the power of social networks to gain the maximum organic search visibility.
use natively hosted videos for
- On-page SEO and conversions
- Showcasing product features and benefits
use videos hosted on social platforms to
- Appear in Google’s rich results and carousels
- Expand the brand’s awareness and reach
Optimize your videos for the Google Search Video Carousel
The Google Search Video Carousel is a horizontal or vertical strip of video results, and appears on both desktop and mobile. The video carousel often shows up above or near the top of search results, and puts the videos directly infront of the users.
the videos that are visible here drive more brand impressions and a higher (than text links) click-through rate. At the same time, when potential customers see your content featured prominently, it signals credibility and brand authority.
Google Search Video Carousel recommendations
- Post short-form videos on social platforms
- Use relevant keywords in the title and caption
- Add chapters and timestamps
- Set the video visibility settings to public
- Optimize videos for engagement (likes, comments, watch time)
And when hosted on your own domain:
- Create a dedicated page for each video
- Create a /videos/ directory or a video dedicated subdomain
- Make sure the page is crawlable
- Embed the video with VideoObject schema markup
- Use “watch” or “video” in the page’s title tag, H1, and meta description
- Upload the video to YouTube
Appearing in Google’s Video Tab
Google’s video search tab pulls from a mix of:
- YouTube
- Instagram, Facebook
- TikTok
- Video-optimized brand pages
Google’s Video Tab recommendations
- Upload the video to the recommended platform
- Optimize filename, title, and description
- Include timestamps or key moments
- Embed the video on your own landing page with VideoObject schema
- Include a full transcript on the page
- Use “watch” or “video” in the page’s title tag, H1, and meta description
Building SEO-Optimized Watch Pages
Here’s how to build your own SEO-friendly video landing page.
Step 1: Optimize the on-page video details
- Place the video above the fold on the page
- Use custom thumbnails that show the product / product result
- Avoid lazy-loaded content or modal popups
- Use ‘View’ or ‘Watch’ in the title and/or description
- For longer videos create chapters with timestamps
- Add the video to the video navigation architecture
Step 2: Use a dedicated video location
- Create a dedicated page for each video
- Use a /videos/ directory or a subdomain (e.g., videos.example.com/product-name)
- Organize videos logically (by category, product type or recipient etc.)
Step 3: Use technical SEO to further optimize the videos for search
- Create a video sitemap and submit it through Google Search Console
- Make sure the robots.txt allows crawling of video pages
- Avoid embedding videos inside tabs or popups without HTML fallbacks
- Embed the video with VideoObject schema markup
- Create an internal linking architecture for videos

Leveraging Social Media for Video Visibility
Social platforms often outperform native-hosted videos in Google’s video carousels. Here’s what to take into account when posting your videos on social media:
Video platforms vs. Video Types: Our recommendations
| Platform | Recommended Content Type |
|---|---|
| TikTok / Instagram | Unboxing, personalization, gifting reactions |
| YouTube Shorts | Quick demos and “before/after” transformations |
| Pinterest / YouTube | Step-by-step process videos and styling guides |
| Facebook / Instagram | Seasonal promotions and crossposting from Reels |
